A new home for NYT

This was the first commission I ever did for DSDHA. A building that incorporates a refurbishment of the National Youth Theatre’s existing spaces on the Holloway Road, plus an extension to the front.

A whole building full of actors-in-training meant we weren’t short of people who didn’t mind being in photos…

In the morning, staff members introduced me to all the teachers and students who were going to be in workshops that day. We spoke with them about why I was there and what I was doing and double checked everyone was comfortable with being in photos. Anyone under 18 had consent forms already signed by their guardians. A couple of people (politely) asked not to be in photos so we made sure to avoid them, but generally all day we were able to work very naturally. No posing or styling.

I spent a day and a half at the building photographing and filming all kinds of workshops, classes and rehearsals. Having people present in the images was absolutely essential to tell the story of how the building works.

In addition to the photographs that the architects commissioned, Open House Festival (led by Open City) also asked me to make a short film about the project as part of a wider series. I worked with long-time collaborator Nyima Murry on the video.

Footage from the film was used extensively in The Architect Has Left The Building, an installation of our work.

Massive thanks to all the staff at NYT for their help, and to the students as well. The film was made alongside Nyima Murry, Ameena Rojee did the behind-the-scenes photos, and Ellen Christina Hancock assisted me
